Recensione : Wake Up! Ispirato alla campagna presidenziale americana del 2008 e concepito durante la stessa, "Wake Up!" è un'istantanea del passato attivista R&B's.

Il singer John Legend insieme al più "groovoso" gruppo hip-hop in circolazione, The Roots , resuscitano 11 canzoni di protesta soul degli anni '60 e '70, con lo scopo di evocare e catturare il fervore sociale di quel tempo.

Nei brani " Compared to what " di Les McCann e "Little Ghetto Boy di Donny Hathaway," Legend e The ROOTS illustrano quei tempi di guerra con racconti della classe operaia ancora molto sentiti e mai passati di moda.

Già al primo ascolto, i piaceri abbondano, anche se " THE ROOTS " non osano molto con gli arrangiamenti tipici del loro sound, mantenendo il più possibile fede alle versioni originali.

La rielaborazione di "Hard Times", hit di Curtis Mayfield, è scandita da un basso pieno di tensione, da disarmanti fiati e da un verso "rappato" da Black Thought - MC dei ROOTS sin dal 1987 - , mentre il brano di Ernie Hines' " Our Generation " si presenta molto più funky, e "sporco".

THE ROOTS sono senza dubbio più a loro agio nei brani di Harold Melvin & the Blue Note '"Wake Up Everybody" (hit spaziale con l'apporto di Melanie Fiona e Common, bellissimo anche il video) , e in " Hang on in There " di Mike James Kirkland's .

John Legend , invece , esce un pò fuori dal suo sound abituale particolarmente presente in " Evolver ".

Commovente il " sentimento " espresso nel brano di Bill Withers " I Can't Write Left Handed " e la svolta reggae in "UMANITY" di Prince Lincoln Thompson.
In " SHINE", "ricorda" che qualche anno fa aveva scritto "ORDINARY PEOPLE" , generando all'ascolto, la medesima sofferenza emotiva.

E' evidente, che Legend & The Roots nel produrre questo lavoro, guardano al di là delle hits, inviando una lettera d'amore agli artisti che spesso trascurano il bene supremo che è la Musica.
